PhD, Biomedical Engineering
BE, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (IIA Hons)
I am a biomedical engineer with a global upbringing, having lived in Taiwan, South Africa and Australia. Currently based in The Netherlands. Probably because of this, everywhere I go, I look and sound like a foreigner đŸ˜…
In 2018, I completed my PhD in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Queensland, where I focused on the key biomechanics of the skin for translating microscale medical devices. I investigated the allometric relationship between animal models and humans to expedite the adaptation of transdermal drug delivery and biomarker sampling platform technologies, such as the Nanopatch, for clinical use. Before that, in 2012, I graduated from UQ with a degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with IIA Honours.
Shortly after the completion of my PhD, I moved to The Netherlands to join TU Delft as a Postdoc, where I developed a force- and motion-sensing hip arthroplasty implant device. I supervised several students through their Bachelor and Master thesis projects, and assisted in the Medical Technology Design course. My work led to several publications, funded grants and the filing of our implant design for a priority date. In 2022, I began my role as a Health Data Scientist at TNO, working on the Health Patch medical-grade wearable device, measuring individual-level data such as heart rate and respiratory rate, as well as population-level data including COVID-19 and obesity. In 2024, I decided to take a break to focus on my health, cycling, travel and the hobbies that I had put aside.
I am quite good at coding with Matlab, HTML and I know other programming languages, such as Arduino, Python and R. I'm also highly experienced with Adobe Creative Cloud apps for content creation, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, After Effects, Audition and Lightroom, all of these I quickly became familiar with since the days back in school. Furthermore, I do extensive 3D CAD modelling using Siemens Solid Edge.
While my work focuses on the R&D of medical devices and data modelling for personalised healthcare, my interests beyond work include cycling and learning new languages. I speak English and Mandarin fluently, have an advanced level of Dutch and French, and have beginner to intermediate proficiencies in Spanish and Afrikaans. Currently, I am a member of WTOS Delft and RWC Ahoy, and I previously cycled with UQCC, progressing from university cycling to racing at the A Grade level in local crits. I am active in content creation, graphic design, and special effects, and I also play the guitar and piano. Additionally, I invest in and manage a portfolio of US and European stocks and ETFs.
